KV-1 Model 1940 with Ehkrany Spaced Armor (Mid- to Late July 1941)

This is one of the easiest KV-1 variants to model, since Trumpeter's kit #00357 Russian KV-1 's Ekhranami represents this variant when built out of the box.

Some points to note:

  • Omit the two rearmost lifting eyes from the transmission compartment roof plate, and fill their locating holes.  The kit provides four lifting eyes, but there should be only two.
  • Most if not all vehicles were fitted with applique armor on the hull front and driver's front plate by this time.  The kit includes these armor plates as optional parts, so you should use them.
  • Most but not all vehicles by this time carried ehkrany on both hull and turret.  The kit includes the hull ehkrany.  If you decide to model a vehicle without hull ehkrany, you should add applique armor to the upper hull sides above the fenders, since photographs indicate that almost all vehicles without hull ehkrany carried the applique armor.  Trumpeter kit #00356 includes these armor plates as optional parts, so you can use them if you have that kit.  Alternatively you can make your own from 0.8mm styrene sheet since the shapes are fairly simple.
  • DO NOT fit the inspection port in the center of the domed engine access hatch.  This port was not introduced until the end of 1941, long after the ehkrany program had ceased.
  • Omit the cross-cut saw and its bracket from the left-hand fender.  By this time, the saw was located inside the lid of the rearmost stowage box on the right-hand fender.
  • Omit the cylindrical stowage tube from the right-hand fender.  The tube was eliminated from new production vehicles at the end of June 1941.
  • For a turret manufactured by the Izhorskiy Plant, still the most common manufacturer of turrets at this time, eliminate the circular marks around the edges of the turret roof plate, but leave those on the front and rear plates.

By following these steps along with the kit instructions, you will create an accurate representation of a KV-1 manufactured at the end of the ehkrany program, in mid- to late July 1941.
